So today hasn’t been the best day for hobby progress.  I slept in, but I did go to Richmond and Imperial Hobbies to buy some more paint and stuff.  Last night while I couldn’t sleep I finally made an actual army list for Waaagh Musk 40K.  This is my old Space Ork army from Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition.  With the exception of painting two Gorka Morka gangs, I haven’t used any of those figs for years.

More tools of the trade

When the last codex was rumored to be coming out I started to think what it would take to get my army back on the table.  I made plans, I bought stuff. I never made an army list though I did realize that even with just the painted and partially painted stuff I have a full Force Org chart worth of stuff.  Of course a lot of my models are illegal or at least not quite right.  A lot of heavy weapons will need to be swapped, vehicles will need to be modified, new HQ will be in order, but the actual amount of work is less than the Servants of Decay and it requires negligible special orders and no major purchases, maybe three kits and a single blister would be enough.

Most everything in the codex I have an OOP version of with the exception of the battle wagon and trukks.  My trukk has a skorcha so the plan is to convert it into a War Trak Skorcha.  I liked my War Traks and Skorchas back in the day and in Gorka Morka so lots of flamer templates will be in order.  I also want to try some of the new kits and the Loota rules seem good so the only new squads will be Lootas/Burnas.  Everything else is either painted or partially painted.  Here is my first 1500 point list I’ll be working towards, but I already think I’d change it up a bit if I took it to Astronomi-con:

  • HQ: Big Mek with Shock Attack Gun 110 points
  • HQ: Big Mek with Burna on Warbike 98 points
  • EL: 7 X Lootas, Mek, Grot Oiler 110 points
  • FA: 4 x Warbikes with a Nob 140 points
  • TR: Deff Dread 105 points
  • TR: Deff Dread 100 points
  • TR: 12 X Blood Axes with Shootas and Nob 97 points
  • HS: Looted Rhino with Skorcha 95 points
  • TR: 12 X Bad Moons with Nob and Trukk 157 points
  • HS: Looted Wagon with Boom Gun, ie Gobsmasha 130 points
  • HS: Battle Wagon with Killa Kannon 185 points
  • EL: 5 X Burna Boys with Mek 80 points
  • FA: 2 X Skorchas, one with Grot Riggas 85 points

If you read that and said it wouldn’t score very well in Astronomi-con Army Comp, you’re over thinking things.  This is an army that hasn’t been used in a decade that was cobbled together under way different rules and will be kitbashed into legality.  When I learned I could use dreads as troops if I took Big Meks I was all over that, but I’d probably be fine with one less Mek, maybe even just a simple Big Mek on foot would be best, then I could afford more Warbikes, Burna Boyz, Skorchas, possibly even a Nobz Mob in a Battle Wagon.  I might do that all sometime down the road, but the official target army list for Waaagh Musk is listed above and detailed over on the Waaagh.

I still plan to do the Servants of Decay army.  I’ll be painting another test figure for it over grey primer someday soon.  However as someone who is still unemployed, though I did apply to at least three new jobs today, placing a large order to Forgeworld is a ways off.  I need some Forgeworld goodies for my Chaos Spacemarines, or at least I’d like a Rhino conversion kit and the Bezerker Terminator bits.  Those would figure into my 2011 Astro-Van army.  I need a lot of stuff for the Servants of Decay hundreds of dollars worth of stuff.  I could paint 100 orks and not have to buy a model, but to field the army listed above will require a few new kits and maybe some bitz too.

I through some more paint on the Gretchin, the metal bitz are done and I started on some blue fabric type tests.  I used the Foundation Blue then the new GW Wash as I figured that is what most people would do.  I later highlighted with an old pot of Lightning Blue.  I discovered I like painting Brazen Brass way better over Black than over Grey, even after washing it.  Painting Silver over Grey or Gunmetal is no problems.  One of the paints I bought today is the darkest Vallejo metallic I could find.  I also bought some Reaper Master Series paint, well one pot, and some Water Effects which I’ll use on my terrain tiles, which I hope to resume later this month.

Stay tuned for lots more painting, but I really hope I get a job soon and have to fight harder for hobby and blogging time.  I also hope I can get my sleep schedule normalized, we’ll see what the latest blood test reveals.

They are getting sealed right now.  They’ll be dry and ready to go for Astronomi-con Vancouver tomorrow, err in 4 hours.  I’m not sure I will be.  I did finish all my models, though I left out one centerpiece type model as I knew I wouldn’t have had time.  I’ll post more pictures and maybe some secrets next week, but in the mean time check out Da Kan Opena and Lefty the dynamic duo that will lead my army on the field of battle.

Wonder what my critics were doing for the last 72 hours while I was cranking these two out?

The battle continues as I’m still not done my two HQ choices for Astronomi-con Vancouver which starts in about 8 hours.  Last year I stayed up 24 hours straight trying to finish my Chosen and the bases for my tactical squad of Nefarious Fire Chaos Space Marines.  I really should have been done these models by now.  I was lazy in not getting up and starting bright and early, I set an alarm but I just didn’t do it.

I never started painting until well after lunch time, when I spent about three hours painting purple flames…

The Sorcerer is even closer to being done but isn’t finished.  His Force Weapon is done, but I kinda wish I’d painted it green or even purple.  I wanted it to stand out from everything else in my army and by army I mean the entire Chaos Space Marine miniature collection which is considerable.  No one has an orange sword until now…

The leather is also done.  I’ve gotten worse at painting leather ever since my original pot of Snakebite Leather dried out.  I had it from my original paint set, “Ork VS Eldar”.  I still might have a few pots from that set, but I’ve been more ruthless in junking out old difficult to work with paint.  The next pot I need to buy is Tin Bitz, all that Brass has really dried the pot out, maybe it’ll come back but I doubt it.

The skulls are the biggest challenge remaining.  I tried Dhenab Stone on my last batch of skulls, but I’m not sure it combines well with my rusty red wash technique.  I have a lot of skulls to paint on the Terminator Lord with 2 or 3 to paint on the Sorcerer.  I just ran back to my painting desk and painted three more skulls Snakebite Leather that I missed on the Sorcerer.  He has more than I first thought.  I’ve gotten good at painting skulls doing all the Chaos Space Marines, but sometimes it still is a struggle.

Drybrushing does work, but I usually do the skulls last or close to the end and I don’t want to risk it so I generally paint on my highlights and use washes.  I have a new pot of Skull White for the first time in like a decade, well maybe not that long, but a long, long, time.  It will make painting skulls easier.  I still haven’t decided if I’ll use Bleached Bone or Vallejo Model Color Beige…

Now I’m going outside to get some fresh air.  I’m going to walk to the Mac’s which is 24 hour and buy a drink with caffeine in it.  Yes I’m back to caffeine after having a beer or two.  This is what it takes to compete at Astronomi-con Vancouver.  Either that or you just start you army for next year, last year…

I’ve been working on these models for most of the last three days.  I’m finally done the silver and brass metallics and am where I should have been at lunch time.  Of course I should have been done my entire Astronomi-con Vancouver army about a month ago, but I got sucked into painting stuff for next year and entirely too many Warhammer Fantasy Battle models.

I’m printing my army list and packing up.  I have at least another hour or two of painting in me.  I still have quite a lot to do on the chest of the Khorne Terminator Lord but the Slaneesh Sorcerer is mostly done.  I’ve decided before I paint bone or leather I will paint the loin cloth of the terminator and the force sword of the sorcerer.  These are pretty big and need to pop in the case of the force weapon and I’m going to do an off white for the loin cloth just because the Khorne Terminator Lord is really dark right now when viewed head on.

After the bone and the leather I’ll have more metallics to do probably some more silver and golds.  I also have detail work like eyes and trim on the Commissar, plus he has a medal.  Then I hope to varnish it after making sure the bases are up to snuff and then maybe, maybe I’ll have time for some gore…

I procrastinated away the morning.  I just lay in bed for hours.  It is too bad you can’t just visualize the model being finished then it will finish itself.

I’ve spent the last three plus hours painting purple flames.  So I decided to celebrate and take a picture of the models, especially the base of the Terminator Lord.  I used a different camera position so hopefully all the work I’ve done on the resin base is visible.  Before anyone asks it was made by Scibor.  Gotta find the link now.

The purple flames are my new dark purple recipe with slight variations for where on the model the flames are.  The 3D flames are highlighted where as the free hand flames are painted with the lighter colours in the centre.  You can have it both ways as far as I’m concerned.  I mean they are demonic purple flames, the laws of physics don’t apply.

A lot of Purple Flames

A lot of Purple Flames

I still have to paint:

  1. Silver metallic bits
  2. Green tubing
  3. Brass Trim
  4. Bones and Skulls
  5. Belts and leathers bits
  6. Terminator Lord’s Loin Cloth
  7. The Sorcerer’s Force Weapon

Then it is final details like eyeballs and touch up work.  The grey stone on the bases needs a little touch up, but I’m waiting until after I do the Brass Trim.  The Sorcerer’s base actually has a lot more detail behind him, bricks, skulls, shell casings etc.  It is going to be a long night, but I think I will soon leave the house and get some fresh air and a bite to eat.

My right knee is really bothering me.  Too much time spent hunched over the painting table this week…

Well now that I’m back blogging, I guess I should make one more progress post before I call it an evening.  I had hoped to get the purple flames done on both models, but there are so many.  Plus I decided I needed to do the grey rock on the bases before I did the flames, this may have saved me some trouble, but I made my own trouble working on the Khorne Terminator Lord’s base especially.

I’m not sure if it is visible, but this base has a lot of detail.  I’m going to highlight every single flame around the base, plus I have the free hand ones on the armor and cloak.  The sorcerer has a lot of purple flames too.  After I finish those I have to paint the silver metallic bits, mostly weapons such as the combi-bolter the Lord is holding and the big spike that goes through the dead Commissar.  After that I plan to do the green cabling followed by finishing off the brass trim.  There is a lot of brass trim on the Khorne Terminator Lord from Forgeworld.

I should make it, but I still have lots of detail work to do, skulls, belts, the sorcerer’s Force Weapon and all the unpainted detail on the Khorne Terminator Lord.  Tomorrow night may be a late one. Tonight I’m ending at a respectable 10:48 PM.  My eyes, back, and my right knee are bothering me, so hopefully a night’s sleep will help all three.

There isn’t a ‘CK’ either…

So after a few days away from this blog, I’ve gotten some encouragement to resume posting, so I decided I would if for no other reason than to make sure some people, or at least silly internet handles, get the fame they apparently so desperately crave.  That said I think I’m scaling down my online forum participation.  I just don’t feel like going out of my way to help anonymous people online anymore.  I think I deserve to be more selfish after all these years.  Plus there is at least one more forum I’m never visiting again.

So this post is dedicated to all the wonderful people I’ve met online such as:

And of course the many people who have been added to Bell of Lost Souls or have decided that they should go there to be immature online.  Led of course by the self important hobby higher authority himself, TastyTaste.  Who apparently should have picked a better online handle, because I couldn’t find him on the front page of Google… Oh I almost forgot about the guy with the pink text who seems to be proud that he is an asshole online.  Alas his name and blog are so insignificant I can never remember what they are.  Not that I remember any of the names above, but luckily I’ve decided if they want to draw attention to themselves and they choose to do so by picking on people online, well they should pick on someone other than me.

I’ll make you famous!

Why do these people share the same hobby as me? They aren’t people I want to associate with in the real world and I’ll be damned if I’ll give them another 15 seconds of fame.  Onward to the minis I am currently painting for Astronomi-con Vancouver which is this Saturday and Sunday.  I have one day left to finish my HQ choices and do touch ups, pack, maybe re-read the rules seeing as I’ve been playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle recently.  Oh well it is not like I ever get to play test the armies I dream up.  Why start this year?

These models aren’t finished though while I was away from this blog I finished several models.  I’m not doing any step by step tutorials, maybe if you ask Ar_nihs he’ll tell you have to paint dark red or blue or black and type up a nice step by step tutorial on his blog.  Or you can go back in time and see how I did it on other recent models.  The reds and blues are basically done, but the blacks and brass need a lot of work still.

Updated March 2nd 2013

Why do people feel the need to be assholes online? They’ve never met me, but apparently they found my website, linked to it, appropriated some of the content, posted on some obscure forum, but couldn’t resist to the urge to say about something I’ve spent over a decade building “most of which is crap, BTW”.  They even put it in brackets as their opinion is totally superfluous to the actual content of thread. They just felt the need to insult someone online. So in honour of those people who continue to think this is acceptable behaviour online I’ve updated this blog post to immortalize Supaglue who’s real name may be Gilmore something or other, congratulations on being an asshole!

Who the fuck is Supaglue?
